Important Update: Road Travel and Security

  • The road to Lodwar is fully tarmacked, passable and generally safe, contrary to the perception held by some that travel to Turkana is insecure. The journey is scenic and enjoyable, and delegates are encouraged to depart early in the morning and travel during daylight hours.
  • Any important travel updates are normally communicated at Kainuk Bridge, the gateway between West Pokot and Turkana, ensuring that visitors continue their journey comfortably and safely.

Local Turkana Cuisine

Meals & Dining in Lodwar

The summit package covers daytime meals and refreshments during conference hours. However, exploring the local cuisine is a must for delegates in the evenings.

  • Roast Goat Meat (Nyama Choma) & Milk Lodwar is famous for its incredibly tender goat meat (mbuzi) and fresh local milk. This is the true specialty of the region. Local butcheries and hotels serve this alongside Ugali or fries. Average cost: KES 600 - 1,200 per kg.
  • Lake Turkana Fish Fresh Tilapia and Nile Perch are also widely available. Most major hotels prepare it fried, wet-fry, or grilled. Average cost: KES 800 - 1,500 per plate.
  • Local Cafes & Eateries For quick meals or a cup of Kenyan tea, the town center has numerous reliable cafes offering standard Kenyan dishes (Chapati, Beans, Rice, Stew). Average cost: KES 200 - 500 per meal.
Dining & Health Tip Always stick to bottled drinking water. The climate is hot, so hydrating with sealed mineral water is strongly recommended. Most hotels and restaurants stock plenty of cold beverages.

Weather & Packing

Lodwar is hot and sunny (32–37°C day, 22–25°C night). Pack lightweight clothing, a wide hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen (Very high UV). Bring a light jacket for AC rooms.

Health & Medical

Carry a basic first-aid kit and any prescription meds. Well-equipped medical centres and facilities are readily accessible in town. Sufficient hospital and doctor support is directly available at The Cradle Hotel, and the Lodwar County Hospital is also nearby to handle any emergencies.

Connectivity & ATMs

Safaricom and Airtel have strong 4G coverage in Lodwar. Free Wi-Fi is available at the summit venue. Major banks (KCB, Equity, Co-op) have branches and ATMs in town, and M-Pesa is universally accepted.

What You Will Experience
